Free Pattern!!!! Double Up Hat

I made a Cowl for a little girl, who refuses to wear a hat, and while working on the edging a light bulb appeared. I was just winging it with the edging and it kinda looked cool....

HAT! I have to make a hat with that stitch. 

I'm the hat person. I love making hats and I love wearing them! No more sinusitis since wearing hats as soon as the temperature drops below 15 degrees C. I make my kids wear hats all the time. And I'm trying to get my husband (who is a chosen bald one, meaning; he shaves his hair off completely even though he has the thickest hair in the world) wear a hat, but he makes ridiculous requests. Don't ask.....

I just started with a magic circle and let it flow from there.... an hour and a half later... finished! Shock! And it looked cool as well!

As this hat is made with measurements, you can use any hook and any yarn you prefer.

However, the hook you use should be 2 sizes bigger than the hook you normally use with the yarn you choose. It has to be very loose.

I normally use the 5mm with Drops Nepal, but for this hat I used the 7mm

I used for the hat in the picture:

Drops Nepal, Yarn thickness group C, 50 gr = 82 yds, 10wpi
With the 7mm hook: HDC 10x10cm (4”x4”) = 9st x 10 rows

After completing R3a (still in the increasing stage), the diameter of your work should measure 10 cm / 4 inches across, if you follow my gauge and calculations as mentioned below.

For the child size hat as pictured:

For the three color hat, use 1 skein of each color. You will not use all of it.

Head size and increase rounds

You start with measuring the head circumference.

My measurements is 54.5 cm / 21.5inch

I make hats for my kids, they are 4 and 5 yrs old, so I mostly use this measurement as it will fit them both.

To calculate the diameter you need to divide the head circumference with Pi ( π ) = 3.14

So for my head circumference it’s: 54.5 divided by 3.14 = 17.3 cm
                                                    21.5 divided by 3.14 = 6.8 inch

Head size and height of hat

To get the correct height of your hat (from top of crown to bottom of the ear) you divide your circumference by 10 and multiply this number times 4.

So for my hat it works out like this: 54.5cm / 10 = 5.45 x 4 = 21.8cm
                                                     21.5inch / 10 = 2.15 x 4 = 8.6inch

Once we know these numbers it’s easy to make this hat any size you would like.

You start out with R1, always make sure you have an even amount of stitches, best is to use 8.

To increase you follow the normal increase pattern, add 8 st per main round

R1 - 8HDC
R2 - 16 HDC
R2a - 16 HDC
R3 - 24 HDC
R3a - 24 HDC
R4 - 32 HDC
R4a - 32 HDC
R5 - 40 HDC
R5a - 40 HDC
and so on…

Important: Work your HDC’s in the bottom of previous stitch, not just in the stitch on top of the previous round. I call this the “Space” in this pattern.

Join all your rounds with a SLST to the first HDC.

If you want to make a reversible hat, join with invisible join before color change.

R1, MC, CH2, 7HDC in MC, SLST to first HDC - 8st

R2, CH2, HDC in the same space, 2HDC in all of the spaces around - 16st

Change color

R2a, CH1, HDC in the same space as the previous round. 2HDC in all of the spaces of the previous
round - 16st

R3, CH2, HDC in the same space, HDC in next space, *2HDC in next space, HDC in next space* repeat all around - 24st

Change color

R3a, CH1, HDC in the same space as the previous round, HDC in next space, *2HDC, HDC* in all of the spaces of the previous round - 24st

R4, CH2, HDC in the same space, HDC in next 2spaces, *2HDC in next space, HDC in next 2 spaces* repeat all around - 32st

Change color

R4a, CH1, HDC in the same space as the previous round, HDC in next 2 spaces, *2HDC, HDC in next 2 spaces* in all of the spaces of the previous round - 32st

R5, CH2, HDC in the same space, HDC in next 3spaces, *2HDC in next space, HDC in next 3 spaces* repeat all around - 40st

Change color

R5a, CH1, HDC in the same space as the previous round, HDC in next 3 spaces, *2HDC, HDC in next 3 spaces* in all of the spaces of the previous round - 40st

At this point I’m at 17cm, I have reached my diameter as calculated beforehand.

CH2 will count as your first HDC from this point onward.

R6, CH2, HDC in the next space, HDC in each space around - 40st

Change color

R6a, CH1, HDC in the same space as the previous round, HDC in all of the spaces of the previous round - 40st

Repeat R6 and R6a until you have reached desired length. I added until R13a.

Join with invisible join and weave in all ends.

You can add ear flaps or an extra edging round (make sure you keep the hat length in mind while adding edging).
